top pull front derailleur pull from above or below?

I have been having a conversation with someone lately regarding front derailleurs.... we don't agree on the following and are asking that someone can correct one of us!

    A front derailler...

a 'top pull' has the cable come from under the bottom bracket and pulls the cable down
    OR
the cable comes down the seatpost and pulls the derailleur up?

    Thanks
    Ryan

Top Pull pulls from the top

Cable routing is irrelavant as either derailleur can be pulled by a cable comming from under the BB or down from the toptube.

Thanks for the reply but, I am not sure what you mean..

How can either derailleur be pulled from above or below as you stated, I don't understand? When the derailleur is off the bike, the spring mechanism causes the arm to go up, therefore it needs to pull down (with the cable coming from under the bottom bracket) to shift. Is this bottom or top pull?

Top pull is pulled by a cable coming from above the derailleur, while bottom-pull is pulled by the cable coming up from below the derailleur.

You are describing a bottom pull derailleur in your second post.
