thinking about X01 - how much will I miss?

I am geting a new bike and thinking about X01 or XX1. How much gear range will I miss? Will the gears be too far spread out? I am leaning towards a tallboy or camber expert evo and I will use the new bike for general/long fast trail rides as well as some endurance races and events.
if I get a 34/10-42 will I loose at the top or bottom vs a normal 2x10? or is it in the middle with more space between ratios? If I get X01 I save a pound vs XT so I would probably leave it, if I get XT I might upgrade later to save weight, if I really get into it. My preference would be $500 more for X01 and be done, next upgrade would be rims.

With a 32T ring, 1x11 gives you gear ratios of 0.76 to 3.20. A 2x10 (24T and 38T) you have gear ratios of 0.67 to 3.45. So you're really only giving up the largest and smallest gears by going 1x11. For me, the biggest benefit of a single ring means less stuff to think about when you ride, and those two extreme gears are not missed one bit. It's a no brainer, do it!

This sums it up absolutely perfect.

I made the switch a while ago and do not regret it in any way. Any new bike I get will be in a 1x configuration from now on.

I went from a 26/38 front to a 30T front. I lost just over 1 gear on either end. On longer/steeper climbs I wish I had that extra bailout but forcing myself to use what I have has made me a stronger rider already.
