swapping chainrings on my 9spd cranks. its that possible??

    well these is the situation:
i have a XT m760 crank and i was wondering if there would be any trouble if i wanted to combine the big 42 chainring with the middle (36) and granny (26) chainrings from the XT m771??
is these posible?? will i have any troubles with that combo?? im ussing the 9spd m772 GS shadow rear derailleur , the m770 top swing front derailleur and the regular HG 93 chain all paired with the 9spd m770 shifters.
any thoughts on that?? any help will be greatly apreciated

Shimano rates the FD has capable of a minimium drop of 12 teeth I believe..

    So 42 -36 equals 6...

That means you may have problems with the FD shifting from big to middle ring.

I was running 44/36/28. It worked fine. So I say - just do it

I bought a set of 771 rings and tried the same switch. They are not listed as compatible by Shimano. I needed a Dremel tool to get all the rings to fit. Not a big deal.
