My 1995 Cannondale M500 with the STX rear derailler (long cage) is getting worn out and I'd like to start planning on replacing it. Its a 7 speed(11-28...love to get a 11-30) with twist grip shifters. The STX has been good but I cant find one so figured its a good time to upgrade.
When I look online at Jenson I guess a Deore is the closest replacement(or a SLX) but all I see are 9 speeds. Will these work with my 7 speed cassette?
Thanks for the info Tim! Was abit confusing as I've seen older posts on other sites warning about chain issues and not using 9 speeds on older 7 speed cassettes. But then I thought so what am I supposed to do if I break it? Toss the whole bike or buy all new cassettes/chain/cranks???
I've used 8 & 9 speed rear derailleur on my son's 7 speed. Once you set the limits, it'll be fine. Currently, my son has a 9 speed Deore rear derailleur on his 7 speed Alivio drivetrain.
