STX RC to XT rear derailleur conversion question

I have a 1998 model Raliegh M400 with a broken STX RC rear derailleur on it. My question is can I upgrade the STX for a Shimano XT derailleur with no problems? I think my bike is an 8 speed(it has 8 chainrings on the back). Can I get a derailleur for a 9 speed? Any help is appreciated. thanks--Brad

The XT will work just fine and it'll feel fantastic after the STX. I'd recommend a new set of gear cables, too.

Yes, current 9 speed Shimano RDs are drop-in replacements for the STX-RC 8 speed versions. If you keep your 8 speed cassette, keep the 8 speed shifter too. Likewise, if you're upgrading to a 9 speed cassette, you'll need to change to a 9 speed shifter.
