    Sram and Shimano compatability.

On my downhill bike I have a 9 spd Shimano deore xt short cage rear derailleur with a Shimano deore l shifter. I just recently broke the shifter riding and need a new one. I was wondering if I could use a Sram X9 9 spd shifter with this derailleur? My cross country bike has sram shifters on it with a shimano front derailleur and it works just fine. I really like the Sram push push shifting a lot better then the Shimano 2 way shifters. I just need to know if this compatability will be o.k.

unfortunately not. Front derailleurs are all cross-compatible, but rear derailleurs must be used with the same brand shifter

Not quite true. Most SRAM rear shifters and derailleurs work on a 1:1 cable pull ratio. Shimano works on a 2:1 ratio.

SRAM makes both twist shifters and trigger shifters that are 2:1 and work with Shimano rear derailleurs. These shifters are marketed as ATTACK shifters.

You can also get a J-tek Shiftmate to make a Sram 1:1 shifter work with a Shimano derailer.
