    Solution wanted

Dont know if any drivetrain gurus can help me out but heres hoping.

Ive built up a 16" bike for my 4 year old and want to add gears within the next 12 months.

Ive sourced a 3 speed freewheel and the spacing between the teeth (gear to gear) is 5.5mm approx

What I now need to figure out is which shifter and derailleur combination I could use to get the required shifts.

Obviously 4-5 year old grip and finger strength is limited and I need to weigh up a trigger shifter vs grip shift as well as actuation rations and cable pull.
Through at the rear derailleur can be restricted through using longer H & L screws.
I know this can be done as Ive seen examples on other parts of the forums and Im sure I could use a front shifter since Im only looking at 3 speed.

So my question is has anyone done this type of thing on this forum, or can anyone offer up any advice as to what shifter and rear derailleur combination could be used to achieve a 5.5mm shift.

I think I have seen this done before but I was wondering what the motive is to add gears?

Back when I grew up we didn't get gears until middle school.

    The motive is :-
    a) it can be done as other have done it.
    b) will make it easier for my youngster to ride over various terrain (hills) without having to get off and push.

This is one of the reasons Im only looking a 3 gears (up/flat/down) and Im also tied because the rear end is only 110mm spacing.

Ok tried her out with the 3 gears available today by using 3 chain lengths and by manually adjusting. It was a pain dismantling but she certainly found the gears beneficial and was easily able to get up the hill without coming to a stop or having to try and stand on the pedals.

From what I've picked up on the forums the grip shifters don't seem to work well with little hands so options now restricted to triggers, may also need to look at replacing the spring in whatever derailleur I go for to further reduce the amount of force required to change.
I'm also wondering if I could use a front 3 speed shifter since I only need 3 speeds

    Any thoughts / ideas?
