SL-SS95 XTR Remote Rapid Fire question X-post 29er

I've got a set of H-bars on my SIR9 and I'm thinking of setting it up as a 1x9... I've already obtained an old school XTR rear derailleur so I'm set on that. Now I'm looking at the SL-SS95 (aka) the XTR remote shifter:
    http://www.totalbike.com/cgi-bin/ref...SS95&page=185z
Now then, on the page referenced above it refers to 2 possible kits that can be purchased... I am assuming kit #2 only differs in that it includes additional cables...

So it says that kit #1 replaces the stand alone shifter (sl-m950) ...

Would I be wrong in assuming that kit #2 can do the same and just have some extra cables left over??

So onto the question that is burning in my mind:
Do I need to purchase an XT or XTR shifter to use with the SL-SS95, or will the remote shifter work as a stand alone shifter?

Thanks in advance for any help / advice

Kit #1 is for the shifter pod upgrade and kit #2 is for integrated shifter/lever upgrade. They aren't interchangeable. These kits are used to upgrade the M950 shifters (8 speed) up to M951 (also 8 speed) standards so they can be used with the remote shifter (and Shimano Flight Deck computer). The remote shifter does not have indexing and needs to be tied into a remote compatable shifter. In other words, the remote ca not be used as a stand alone shifter. I think the M952 9 speed shifters are also remote/Flight Deck compatable but I don't have any to check for sure. I hope that helps.

    excellent help

Excellent info. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I've got a remote setup on the way and I guess I'll wait for it to get here and check out what else I need for the conversion when it gets here... I can work with either... it will just change what I need to get...

All 8-speed 950 shifters and 952 are remote compatable/ready. I own both 8 and 9 speed shifters and didn't have to modify anything to attach the remote. The thumb paddle and trigger shifter has holes in them to thread the remote cable thru.

I found if you don't rotate the remote correctly, it could jamb your shifting. It's something with how the remote shifting cables are routed to the main shifters.

Got Flight Deck hooked to both shifters w/o any problems, too.
