    skipping on steep uphills

HI there. I am all set to enter my first race this Sunday, went riding today and now have a new problem with my bike. The jam up is I have to work 12 hr days the next two and wont be able to get my bike fixed my the LBS before that. Before I throw in the towel and not race I wanted to see if it sounds like something I may be able to fix on my own. This is the problem:

On steep short uphills, when I shift down with a moderate amount of tension on the pedals/chain the rear derailler seems to be skipping, I "catches" at one point the chain completely seized up and one other the chan came off the rear cogs. I dont see any visible damage to the unit itself (its an LX) I would really appreciate if anyone out there can help me figure out a way to make it better before Sunday, Im not too mechanically inclined with my bike, but hope I can do something with this. Thanks ! AMY

Shift into middle chainring and one of middle cogs on back. Look from back of bike and make sure the the upper derailleur pully is DIRECTLY underneath the gear. Center of pully should line up right in center of gear you are in. If not turn barrel adjusters and try riding again after you make adjustment. Sounds like you may be off slightly and it is easy fix. If that doesn't work, can be something more serious, bad cassette, stretched chain, etc.

How old is your drivetrain? I had similiar symtoms last fall, it turned out to be a worn out chainring. It would only skip under hard efforts in lower gears.
