Shimano RD spring tension - which hole, what effects?

I'm hoping to spend dome time tomorrow doing my first complete RD overhaul. I'll be replacing the pulley's and main pivot bolt (all aluminum). I've never done this before, but it looks easy enough. I've been reading Park's instruction's, however i'm a little unclear on the tension adjustment. I understand the concept - you can choose between more or less tension when you re-assemble the spring by choosing a different hole to insert the tension spring into. Fine, but does this affect anything else? I'm looking at this and while I don't think it would affect shifting i'm not 100% sure. It must affect it somehow, right?

Anyone done this? Care to share? Pro's, con's, anything is appreciated.

I'm hoping this "mod" would help reduce chainslap when installed on my NRS. This would be the appropriate way to do so, yes?

FWIW, the RD is an XT 737 long cage.

    PATAI!

Nevermind, got it done last night and rode it today. Man oh man, do I ever wish I did that sooner. I don't ever remember having such a smooth shifting RD. Better than new!
