    Shimano OEM 10-Speed 11-42 Cassette

So I notice that the new Deore ten-speed mountain group includes an 11-42 cassette. Does anyone know how well this will run with all the legacy SRAM and Shimano ten-speed shifter/derailleur gigs?

It should run just fine, right?

This could be a real problem solver for a lot of us running bandit 1x10.

Totally agree on the goatlink for any 11-42 cassette, I have many of these 10-speed setups scattered through out family and friends and they work well. That new Deore cassette will most likely weigh a quite a bit though and it may be worth looking at the SunRace MX3 11-42.

good catch with the cassette wasn't aware it's a 10 speed.

the goat link is not a recommended solution to improve clearance for the upper pulley, better use a dedicated 2017 deore derailleur

You can use any Shimano 11spd derailleur with these 10spd cassettes.

Not happy with Sunrace, despite the lighter weight. Does anyone know when this Deore cassette will be available?

I think a long-cage Shimano 10-s dérailleur might work on 42 without a goat-link. Let me know when someone tries it? :0)

I doubt it, the cage length isn't the issue, it's the position of the guide pulley. All the new 11spd and 10spd stuff has offset pulleys, like on the rad and radr cages from one up.

As far as the cassette, I was told by my LBS that it will be mid-August, if anyone is interested. It's an option if a few grams isn't a bother to you and you actually want a Shimano quality shifting cassette.

It will depend on your definition of "work", with a longer B-screw it will "work" as in "it will shift but it will not be pretty nor silent".
That's my experience with a XT M786 clutch derailleur and a 11-42 cassette.

It depends. I have 3 bikes with an 11-42 sun race cassette. Banshee pyre has xt m786 and won't shift to the big gear with b-screw all the way in - goatlink solved it. OnOne inbred 29 has m786 and shifts great with b-screw all the way in - no goatlink. Santa Cruz superlight 29 has an xt m8000 derailleur and b-screw is about 1/3 in and works great. I'd go with a m8000 if any of the m786 derailleurs break.

10speed 10-42 with 10 speed rear derailleur is pretty much a looser setup. If you have a Shimano 10 speed shifter and want more range and save some bucks get a Shimano SLX 11speed derailleur and a sunrace 10 speed 11-46 cassette (no typo - they're quite new but do exist!)

Really? I did not know that. That changes my formula on what to do.

Finally. 11-42 isnt enough. Have to choose speed or climbing and no one likes walking hills.
