    Shimano Octalink Spindle Length Question

I was looking at some octalink BB's for a friends bike and was puzzled by the weird different length's that they are offering. I have not pulled the crank to measure the spindle but i know it's supposed to have a 68x113mm BB (regular, square taper,Isis interface) but the lengths were all in fractional sizes 112.5, 117.5 etc. Are they just using a shorter spindle on those?

V1 (ie XTR and road stuff) comes in sizes like 109.5, 112.5, 116, 118.5

    V2 (XT and below) comes in sizes like 113, 118, 121, 126

Which one you use is very dependent on the Model Number

Well, that isn't enough information...need the actual model number (found on the backside of the crank arm near the end of the crankarm)

    If its a FC-M571 then a 113mm gives a 47.5mm chainline and a 118mm gives a 50mm chainline.

    If its a FC-M572 then a 121mm gives a 47.5mm chainline and a 126mm gives a 50mm chainline.

OK, then a Octalink V2 such as the ES-51 with either the 113mm spindle or 118mm spindle (47.5mm or 50mm chainline)
