hey i was wondering if anyone knew if the shimano m970 rear derailleur was compatibale with 8 speed grip shifters? and if not what type of shifters is it compatible with?

Yes they are....

derailleurs are dumb and pretty much do what the shifter tells them too. 8 speed and 9 speed cassettes are the same size, i.e. fit on the same size free hub body. The only difference is the number of cogs and the spacing between them. The shifter determines how far the derailleur moves with each shift, i.e. the indexing. So the derailleur moves the amount that the shifter tells it to. As long as the shifter you intend to use had a 2:1 actuation ratio, or is specifically listed as being Shimano compatable, it will work just fine.
