shifting fine in middle ring but not in the granny?

tonight i slo-mo crashed and landed derailleur side down. i thought little of it, as i was in the middle ring, and shifting seemed fine. then, when i went to the granny it was all mucked up-shifting into the spokes, not sitting on any sprocket, just not working. i went to take a look, and saw the bent hanger.
i shifted back to the middle and it was fine again.
why would shifting be okay in one ring but not in the other? if i had changed chain lengths, i'd think it was the length of chain causing the problem with the granny, but i just crashed...
    thanks!

You need to get the derailleur hanger bent back or replaced. It doesn't do it when in the middle ring because you chain is in a different spot, angled away from the rear sprockets.

I'd fix the hanger, rather than risk more damage.

i did bend the hanger back-i was worried i'd make it worse, but quite the contrary. thanks for the response-the shifting is again fine, for now.
