Setting up my 1x10 and chain link question...

I have the XT long cage and 11-36 on my camber, went to a 1x10 with 34t race face single speed.
When I first did it my brother put the 34t crank ring to the outside of the crank spider on the stock FC-M552 shimano crank on the bike. I have had problems with chain drop using a fixed slx der so I bought a BB mounted MRP 1.x guide and mounted it last night.

The chainring isn't centered up in the MRP guide unless I mount it to the inside of the crank spider, is that how I should have mounted it to begin with?

Also, since I am no longer using a 44t ring should I go ahead and remove a few links of the chain, would it make throttle response and shifting a little snappier perhaps?
Any advice on how many links is a good rule of thumb or should I wait until I go to a shorter cage der to mess with removing links?

Will I be able to remove links without a special tool?
Hardrock 29er, Niner EMD9, Cannondale F29, Camber Expert, 650b Nickel all gone.

Don't wait. You can remove more links later if you buy a shorter cage der. Since you're running a 1x drivetrain, just shorten the chain as much as possible but still allows good shifting into the large cog. The cage should point a little forward when maxed out but not be level with the ground. Tensioned but not tight.

No. You'll need a 'chain breaker' ... a special chain tool available at your LBS.

Thanks man, my brother ended up having the tool so we'll do this today!
