Rode in the mud - Noisy cranks

Rode a couple days ago in wet and muddy conditions, now my cranks are making noise when I apply enough torque.

I imagine that they're just filthy down in the BB. How do I service this thing? I've never touched my BB before. Or should I just take it to the shop? Will it take long?

If you've never done it before....

take it to the shop. You aren't likely to have all the tools you need to remove the cranks and then the bottom bracket from the frame. Besides it may be something besides just dirt and crud. You could have a bearing going out. Better to let someone with experience take a look at it.

If you have a external cup bottom bracket these can generally be serviced without special least shimano can.
