Road bike derailleurs on MTB? budget drive train.
So I'm working on a Weyless XP, my wife has set a tight budget to get the bike built up, so while I'm going to have to make compromises, I won't sacrifice quality, meaning I won't buy scrap. So I need info on what will work together.

I want to use trigger shifters, 8 or 9 speed, not sure it matters. I want to use shimano gear, it's what I'm used to.

Personally I'd forget about road derailleurs and get Alivio/Deore level stuff. They are designed to be used in off road applications and usually work very well (especially Deore) and don't cost the earth either. Road derailleurs are much weaker than off road versions, so you may end up replacing them more often, so cost in the long run could be worse.

Plus road bike derailleurs are usually short cage, which wont work with a triple crank and mtb cassette.

Thanks for the info, figured I would see what I could do to save money building, but I see it's not recommended.

Some of the weight weenies use road mechs, But the setups are often compromised. Best to stay with parts that were designed for your application and are intended to work together.
