Replacing an XT 9-speed rear derailleur - options?

    Hi,

I just broke my rear derailleur (original - XT) and dropout and I was looking at my options for replacement of the derailleur. The bike is a Rocky Mountain Element 10 2008 (2008 Rocky Mountain Element 10 - BikePedia).

    I only do XC.

    Choices:

    XT:

Shimano XT M770 Rapid Rise 9 Speed Rear Mech | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com (M770)
    Shimano XT M771 9 Speed Rear Mech | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com (M771)
    Shimano XT M772 Shadow 9 Speed Rear Mech | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com (M772)

    SLX:

Shimano SLX M662 Shadow 9 Speed Rear Mech | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com

    XTR:

Shimano XTR M972 Shadow 9 Speed Rear Mech | Buy Online | ChainReactionCycles.com (Worth it? I ride about 10 times a year approx).

What would be my best choice? Are these compatible with my bike? Are they recent parts? Will I need a short or medium cage?

    Thanks,

The first one you listed is Rapid Rise so dont get that one but any of the other ones should work for you
I used to ride to Win ... Now I ride to Grin

While my guitar gently weeps, my bike sits there mocking me

unless you are worried about weight, get the cheapest one... Derailleurs matter less than the shifter (well to a point anyway) The SLX will shift just as well as the XTR if they are both set up correctly and if you break it again (which will happen) you'll be able to afford to fix it
Going to try and bring Trail Tire TV back. go take a look... http://trailtiretv.blogspot.com/

Replacing an XT 9-speed rear derailleur - options?

I broke my XT 9 speed RD, and replaced it with SLX. No difference. If you're gonna spend the money to upgrade, go 10 speed, because its getting harder to find 9 speed bits.
