New question here. Regular drop out to Direct mount conversion?

is it possible to modify the regular drop outs to make it compatible for shimano's direct mount RD's?

It is the hanger, not the dropout. Modify? No. Replace with a direct mount? Maybe, check with the frame company.

If your frame has a replaceable hanger it can be adapted to the direct mount system. If your frame manufacture wants to make the correct hanger. For some reason this format seems to be a little slow to catch on, besides being completely forward and backward compatible.

Well, it is compatible only with Shimano Shadow RDs. I am not surprised there are few takers.

True, but it's not like an entire frame has to be built around it or it requires some cockamaney freehub driver to work. It takes a $10-25 hanger that in theory could be made for any frame with a replaceable hanger. There have been many ideas that are far dumber that have invaded frame design.

Agreed, but I have not seen much of an incentive to do it.

Supposedly Shimano has had some issues with frame interference on certain bikes and that's what drove the new fitment. Basically the forward knuckle was crashing into the dropout or frame on some longer travel bikes. It also gets the derailleur out of the way during wheel changes and is a little stiffer, which is probably the biggest advantage to me. I'm tired of drivetrains shifting it 80% because it's got a flexy hanger that you can't do anything about.

From my understanding, the overall position of the RD does not change. It just shortens the hanger (stiffer) and gets the more forward mounting bolt out of the way of the QR nut for easier wheel changes.

If a shadow type derailleur hits the frame with a standard hanger, it would still hit with a direct mount. Can not really change the RD position without adversely affecting the shifting.
