rear derailleur advice for a newbie..

hello all. i ride a 21 speed gary fisher 21.5" silver series 6061 T6 platinum. not a high end by any means but i love it. i have been hitting trails pretty hardcore recently, about 3-4 times a week. everything works beautifully with the bike for me except for one thing: the rear derailleur! when im riding around town, its fine, but when i hit the off road it bounces violently i know its supposed to - to a certain point, but im noticing other mountain bikes on the same trail not having nearly the range of motion mine does (being a bad thing). I have done other basic modifications, but my knowledge is very limited, and the bike shop i frequent is more of a road bike type of commuter store....

any advice is appreciated, thanks fellas/fellettes

You posted this in the apparel section. It might be more fitting, no pun intended, for a different section.
