question with XT derailleur and chain compatibility

    Hello all,

I'm thinking of switching my rear derailleur from a Sram X7 to a Shimano M786 SGS (I know I also have to change the shifter) to try and minimize my chain dropping (which at the moment is happening a lot.. already have a chainguide on the way).
My main concern is weather or not I would have to change the chain (I have a KMC X10). This worries me because my crankset and cassette are Sram and I don't know if they would work properly using a shimano chain.

    Any help is appreciated

    Thanks everyone!

i think sram and shimano and kmc chains are interchangeable but if the cage length on the deralieurs is different the chain length will be different

Chain length do not depend on cage length.

Agreed, I think in this case is chain width that might be the problem

Chains/cassettes/cranks are compatible as long as the chain matches the number of gears on the cassette.

So theoretically I could use the new derailleur and my current chain?
