Problem with Sram x5, please help!

I bought a set of x5's second hand as I was going for 9 speed at the rear. I've installed them but have a real problem with the rear gear shifting; no matter how I try and fine-tune it, it keeps missing gears, jumping two, ghost shifting etc. I've adjusted the derailleur on the hanger, I've adjusted the wire tension at both derailleur end and the shifter end, I've taken it apart and cleaned it etc but I still get the same results.
I have a long cage derailleur so that should be ok. I've also taken the sprockets off the wheel, cleaned and checked them but that's all fine.
    Can anyone suggest anything, please?
Never had any trouble with 7 speed
    Cheers,
    Mike.

Let me guess. You have a Shimano rear dérailleur?

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common

Since the OP doesn't mention what derailleur he has...that'd be my first guess too

X-5's WILL NOT work on a Shimano rear derailleur

Guilty as charged! Is it only Sram that I'll get away with? Cheers guys for your help, still learning about bike maintenance.
