Problem going into large gears on front derailler

My friend has a Specialized Rockhopper about three years old, the front derailler is hanging up and he can't shift into the largest gear. Any advice on how to fix this problem without taking it to a LBS. I have recently decided that I would like to start working on my own bike as my service plan at the bike store just expired and I think it would be helpful to know how to fix bikes on my own. In my thoughts the best way to get started learning bike repair would be on a friends bike.

    is it hitting the gears?

back off the high limit screw all the way out.. if it still wont shift, turn the barrel adjuster all the way clockwise (its on the shifter). if it still doesnt shift your der is hitting something and needs to be physically moved, or something broke. if either of those work, you'll have to go back and readjust the limit screw and set the barrel adjuster.

i bet its just the limit screw or barrel adjuster though..

oops, i meant counter clockwise.. clockwise loosens the cable, you want to try it tighter.
