    Phil

I have not had good luck with any White Industries products. Their current bb is a much better design than their first effort though.

If you need infinite off-center adjustment capabilities for quirky chain lines, Phil is the way to go. If not, I recommend the Shimano BB-UN-73 which should still available at Nashbar (I can dig up the link to then on their site if you are interested; won't come up on a search). I run two BB-UN's (a 73 and a 72) both have been dunked in water crossings countless times and are still quiet as the day I installed them.

Shimano UN55 costs $20-$25, lasts for years, you can buy four or five of them for the price of a Phil Wood or White Industries.
Single and loving it (single speed bike that is)

^^^ Or for a few bucks more you can upgrade to a UN73! I like the shimanos, but between Phil and White Industries I say Phil all the way. Why? Because I've seen 20 year old Phil's that were perfect and 2 year old WI's that were shelled, and never vise versa.

Assuming you can find the long discontinued UN73 model in the size you need. The spindle is hollow on the UN73 for lighter weight, otherwise there is no reduction in durability on the UN55

What the heck? You stop wrenching for a few years and everything changes, I figured the UN73 would be a staple until the end of time. Maybe I better stock up on V-brake pads before they decide to stop making them too!

Not much to choose from, but here are a few sizes at a good price.

The UN-72 (with metal cups on both sides) is actually lighter than the UN-73. I still have one brand spankin new UN-72. Duddn't get much better than them except for Phil Wood at a lot higher price and more adjustment capabilities.

This. I even have UN53s that have lasted through years of abuse and neglect.

I have a 1991 White Industries Ti BB and it is by far the smoothest bottom bracket I've had on any bike. It still works fine and spins forever.

If you are determined to get one of the Shimanos but can't find one in the size you need...take heart. Just like their hubs, the bottom brackets are cup-and-cone, and you can (theoretically) replace the spindle, if you are willing to go through the trouble.

I'm not a total weight weenie but checked a few last night for grins:

    Phil Wood 113x73 Ti spindle w/ cups = 163.07g
    " " " Stainless spindle w/ cups = 250.23g
    BB-UN-72 113x73 = 266.01g
    BB-UN-73 113x73 = 256.91g

    " " " Stainless spindle w/ cups = 250.23g ~ $155 = $0.62 / gram
    BB-UN-72 113x73 = 266.01g
    BB-UN-73 113x73 = 256.91g
    BB-UN-55 = 320g ~$23 = $.07/gram
I couldnt find the price of a NOS UN72 or 73 for the comparison but have run the UN54/UN55 for a while on older bikes without fail.
