Searched 'chain slap' but having trouble synthesizing input from the 80 pages of responses...

Still annoyed by excessive chain slap. I've considered an Sram RD for better tension, but the problem is mostly due to LATERAL chain swing- slapping inside the FD. I tried taking a few links outta the chain (who needs 44:32?!), ironically causing it to fall off the big ring on bumpy downhills. Who would've thought that removing links would result in more drops? (I estimated that the increased tension possibly coupled with a non-perfectly-straight chain line per gears-used was PULLING the chain off).

I also put a Salsa 3-ring guard on and had to raise the FD some, but the slapping problem was present beforehand.

XT rear der, B tension good (no B>chainstay knocking)
    chain stay padded (no stay-slap)
    front der is straight
    new chain

Is this something I just need to get used to?

If you have a rear derailleur you are going to have chain slap.

Wrap the chain stay with an old inner tube to mute the noise.
The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common
