    noisey crank

I have a Trek 820 mountain bike. I took it apart to clean it last week and on my first ride after cleaning it I and getting some nasty popping sounds when I come out of the saddle. I tried adjusting the derailleur tension but the sounds are still there, and only when I come out of the saddle. Any clues what the cause of these noises and how to fix them?

Noises can be hard to find. It is very easy to blame the crank or BB. The best thing to do is start at the handle bars and work your way back. Touch every single screw, nut and bolt on the bike to make sure that everything that needs it has grease and everything is tight. You said you just cleaned it, you might have got water into a place that needs grease. You also stated you only hear the noise while out of the saddle. When you are out of the saddle you are putting more weight on the handle bars. I just had the same problem with my bike and I could have sworn the noise was coming from the BB, but it was a loose screw on the handle bars. Good luck.

Sounds like you've got a loose bolt somewhere. I'd start by checking every bolt on the bike.
