new shimano 105 5700 FD with SLX 9-Speed casette?!

    Dear all,

I plan to finally upgrade my crosscheck´s drivetrain. Current setup would include a new 105 Shimano compact crankset (FC5750), SLX 9-speed RD and dura-ace 2-/9-speed downtube shifters. I was thinking to get the new 105 FD (FD5700), but this one says to be compatible only with 10-speed cassettes?! Is it a problem to use it with the 9-speed SLX in rear?

    Best,

    Björn

Front derailleur has nothing to do with a cassette...but you should run a 10 speed chain which will work fine on your 9 speed cassette.

thanks for your reply. But do I need to use a 10sp chain? I do a lot of miles on this bike and a 10speed chain will probably lengthen faster and be more expensive? However, this FD seems to be available only in 10sp...

10 speed chains use the same thickness rollers and side plates as a 9 speed chain, they are simply made to tighter tolerances with higher strength pins (making them narrower and more expensive). If anything they will last LONGER than a 9 speed chain.

ok, good to know! One last question to the bike experts: with 34/50 in front and 11-34 in back, do I have to go with the long cage RD or is the short one enough?

    Thanks,

    Björn

Mid cage (GS) will work fine, I've used one with a very similar setup (11-32 with a 34/50) with no issues.
