I'm running a 7 speed set up with truvativ stylo cranks, works fine. I found that taking apart an sram pg950 cassette and using the cogs with the 7 speed spacers worked fine, allowing me to get a 34 tooth large gear. I just used all the 9 speed cogs from large down using only the smallest cog from the 7 speed set. The jump on the last one is big, but everything else actually shifts much better with the 9 speed cogs. They are the same thickness as the 7 speed cogs, just the spacers are different.
