Ok so I bought my first "good" MTB from a LBS this year...It's a Trek 4300 disk.. After a lot of riding I find that I am always in the middle gear up front and shift up that down the 8 rear gears. So I just see the other two gears in front as a waste. They never get used and I would like to see if it is feasible for me to get rid of them.. If this is something that is very costly $$$ then I can keep them, but if it isn't too much then I'd like to get rid of them.
I am a noob at this stuff, but I am good at mechanical stuff so I think that I can handle it.
So where do I start? What will I need to make this bike into a good 1x9 setup? Thanks in advance!
Ideally you'd want a dedicated DH chainring, chain device and short cage mech. However you can just take off your unwanted rings, put some slightly shorter chainring bolts in, use your front mech as a chain device and take a few links out. Should cost you all of £5 for the bolts!
I haven't taken the cranks apart yet, but it looks like the 3 chain rings are riveted in place... or maybe I wasn't looking in the right spot? Anyway- I think I will keep my 8 gear cassesett and replace the rear-derailleur and get some sort of 32-34t front chain ring.
Questions: To run this set up what type of rear-derailleur will I need? Short or mid cage? Also, what would be a good 32-34t chain ring assuming I cannot use mine?

Medium cage or short is good - and make sure your chain is tight (put it over the front CR and largest cog in the rear and overlap two links). The Blackspire SS chainrings work well. Other than that you should just get an N-gear jumpstop (for the inside) and something like the BBG bashguard (for the outside)..very cheap and effective set-up.
