    Is my cassette worn out?

Ok, so I swapped my drivetrain to a new frame. I have a SRAM XX 11-36 cassette with about 2500 miles on it. I put on a new chain (Shimano XT) while I was at it. My shifting worked just fine before. Now, as I shift to my granny gear under heavy load, the cassette makes a loud cluck it seems like every couple of teeth, like it's slipping or wanting to get out of gear. It shifts into gears fine and doesn't protest if there's not a lot of load.

Do you think I could fix this with further adjustments to my derailleur (an XT Shadow Plus) or do I need a new cassette? I've never had to replace a cassette for wear.

Take a look at your chainring... the small one... when it's worn, it'll skip.

Is this the first new chain you've put on this particular drivetrain?

Depending on the wear to the dt, it may just be too worn for a new chain, which means you need a new drivetrain.
But I'd check the chainring first... maybe your pulleys (wheels on the rear derailleur), alignment of your drivetrain, alignment of the derailleur cage, hanger...

Your cranks are in solid right? No play?

Yeah, the crank's in fine, and the XT chainrings look good. The granny tooth on the cassette "looks" a little beat up. Yeah, the chain is a first time replacement.
