New question here. Is my bike shop right? (Crank/BB compatibility)

My bike is in need of a new crankset after the old one bent. The BB (an old-ish Shimano cartridge square-taper type) also needs replacing as the plastic outer on one side is cracked up.

I've not kept up with the bike gear world for some time, so put a little trust in the local bike shop. They are ordering up a Shimano M522 crankset and bottom bracket.

The thing is, they've written on the order that they're ordering another square taper BB. From the info online, it looks like I need an octalink BB and that these are external type.

Also, some places say that if you're going from an internal to external type BB you need to get the shell faced. This wasn't mentioned in the shop. Is it required?

I don't mean to be overly questioning, but there's a lot of stuff changed since I last replaced parts on this bike so it's hard to know which questions to ask.

The M522 requires an Octalink V2 BB. It's not external bearing and it's not square taper.

It's a cartridge bearing BB (like a square taper) but it has a splined spindle.

Thank you for clearing that up. It's a confusing old world for someone trying to get back up to speed!
