Losing engagement periodically on smallest cog

Let's see if I can explain this correctly:

Hammerschmidt up front, XTR components in the rear. All new (less than 50 miles on everything, including chain & cassette)

This only happens when on the smallest rear cog, but there it is consistent.

When on that cog, in either gear on the front, it's engaged fine for one or two rotations, then seems to disengage, slip a link or two and then reengage for the next couple turns of the crank and repeats again and again.

    Any ideas?

I'll look into it, but I feel like if it were the hub, it would do it regardless of where on the cassette it is. I think, while I'm there, I'm gonna check if I can see the chain jump off the cog as well.

It happened to me on the Mavic Xmax Sl it was really annoying, later I found out I had to replace a bushing.

Stiff chain link, dirt packed into the cassette.
