loose crank, rounded taper..bottom-bracket & crank damaged?

I'm considering a used Trek mtb, & this is what the owner is telling me:

and it's needed a new bottom
bracket the whole time so we never used it. Specifically, one of the square
tapers is rounded, so the crank on that side has far too much play. Other than
that it should ride fine, as far as I can tell.
bottom bracket square taper is steel, the crank arm is (aluminum) alloy. The damage he is talking about is the square-hole in the crank, right? Al will get damaged before the steel square taper..?

The damage means this requires a new crank.. He is saying a new bottom-bracket..??

I'd be suprised if the bottom bracket axle is worn. Likely the crankarm was loose and they rode it, rounding out the crankarm. Likely it just needs a crank.
