    Long Cage, Short Cage? Whats the differance?

    I was looking at derailers and noticed they come in long cage and short cage, whats that all about?

    Nate,

    so... if you're running a 1x9 can you forgo the math on the front ring(s) and just subtract the small cog from the large?

    let's say: 36t Front ring and 11-27 rear cassette. That would be fine with a short cage Dura Ace RD, right?

    (still looking for a good deal on a Rohloff...also need to wait till my Rohloff frame is done)

    That is correct, except that you do need to make sure that a SS length derailleur jockey wheel will clear whatever cog you're running. Shimano states low cog clearances on their product spec, but others on these boards who have tried the same have reported no trouble clearing the 34T pie plate.
