Long cage with one chainring
Hello. I just ordered an XT long cage 10sp rear derailleur because I wanted the little clutch gizmo. Now I've decided I'm going to switch my front triple 22/32/44 to a single 34T chainring, and proceeded to order stuff for that.
So will the new long cage derailleur work fine with a single 34T chainring (and 11/36 cassette)?
It will work fine.
However, long cage can be less than ideal for a 34/36 combo.
A bit more chain + cage than you need, but it may be no big deal depending on your frame + trail conditions.
Make sure you employ a narrow/wide front chainring.
yeah, with a 11-36 and a single front ring, you need a rd with a capacity of only 25 teeth, which you could now manage with a small cage (rated capacity 25 teeth). i run a 2x drive 20/36 with a 11-36 rear and use a medium cage (rated 35 teeth for shimano). your long cage is rated to 43 teeth. if you're not familiar there's a formula to determine what capacity you need. definitely use a nw chainring as 11053 recommends.

It will work fine. Had SLX long cage and 34 front ring for a while, no problems at all.
