    Just bought XT Rear Der.

Should I install this now or wait until I get a new chain & cassette? I'm new to the whole upgrade/maintenance scene. I thought I had heard that it can hurt to combine old stuff and new stuff? Maybe I'm imagining things..

You can put on a new derailluer on an old drivetrain without any problems. The only new/old combination you need to worry about that I can think of is a new chain on a very worn cassette.
