Installed new XT 9spd cassette on Hope ProII steel freehub and theres play

SSIA, theres play even when the lock ring is secured.

I dont think cranking down the lockring to a ridiculously tight level would solve it.

    is this normal?

do i just go find the smallest hub spacer possible or is it OK to have some play on a nice cassette?

Get a cassette spacer, and then be sure to check the limit screws on your R/D

This used to be a common problem with the XT cassettes and Chris King hubs. It has to do with how the smallest cog is made (fits over the cassette body) and the cassette freehub body itself. I don't know if this is the case with your Hope hub.

Here's a link to an older discussion:
Mystery Solved? CK HUB & Loose Cassette

I think they refer to the freehub body as being a C type (where the splines stop just below the top of the freehub body). I took a file and slowly tapered down the splines of my freehub body to fix.

    Hope that helps.
