    I need 2x9 180mm, what should I do?

Adapt XT or XTR to a 29t? Does anyone make a 29t with the correct BCD?
    Use some old stuff?
Something new I don't know about?
    Please advise!

    I'm doing something similar...

this year on my 29er hardtail. As far as I know, 29 tooth rings aren't easily available without going custom or finding one of the older Ritchey setups. I got and old LX square taper crankset (with the cassette style chainrings) off of eBay that I had a 5 arm 94/58mm spider for. I'll be running 30/42 tooth rings and an 12-34 tooth cassette. I think the square taper cranks might be better for this application since you can fine tune chainline with different spindle lengths...the newer splined cranks don't usually offer more than 2 spindle lengths and the shorter one is usually a bit too long for a double chainring set up.

    I used a 2x7 for several years.

The front was 45/28 on a 110/74 BCD crank. Used a 28t inner ring and the 45t set in the middle position.

    Used a 12-34 7 speed FW.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common
