    How often do components change?

I'm wondering about how often does SRAM or Shimano change their components. For example, is a Shimano Deore XT RD from 2006 the same as one from this year? How often do they usually do significant design changes?
    Thanks

That doesn't really help. I'm wondering how often they get updated.

Sporadically, and usually in response to issues with the current product. If it ain't broke they don't fix them.

what do you want to know? is there a set timetable for updating? they get updated when they have something to update. the xtr group got updated in 2007, the xt in 2008. the xtr shadow is new, the xt shadow was new earlier this year
your earlier question , is the 06 xt the same as now? NO IT ISNT

Shimano is on a 4-5 year product cycle, sram is on their first cycle unless you want to count the crap they made 5 years ago as a cycle.

No, I'd say Sram is on at least their second, discounting their older crap. New trigger design a couple years ago, they've added front derailleurs, and the rears have changed a bit.

Sram actually shifted their product line down during 06-07. IE: 2006 x7 is now 2007 x5 and so on. The 2006 x0 isn't exactly the same as the 2007 x9 but they are similar. I can't see them doing that again for 08 but new stuff probably comes out every couple of years.
