How big of a size difference can the front der. accommodate?

How do you know how many teeth up your der will shift?

    This page (Product) lists

I've got a standard XT 22/32/44 triple ring up front and would like to go to 22/36/bash, I'm wondering if my front derailleur will have any trouble with that. I have a direct-mount SLX 9-spd FD-M661.

The specs on the shimano website will list the max teeth difference for each derailleur

In the link you provided yourself you can find the SI-6PZFA.pdf file, which includes a table which says that the overall tooth difference for this derailleur should be max 22T and the minimum difference between outer and middle ring should be 12T. Leaving 10T for middle to granny..
You'r better of with double specific SLX front derailler, which is made for the rings you'd like to use..

On the other hand.. it will probably be fine...

Thanks for the responses guys but are you sure those are the real limitations? Alex, I did see that information, but it's regarding triple ring, so the max teeth difference is listed as 22. That's the difference between the 22t granny ring and the 44t big ring. But can the der handle that change without the middle ring in between? I doubt it.

Leech, you're making an assumption there which may or may not be a good one, but it seems reasonable. So I take it there isn't a published number explicitly stating the size range for small and middle rings. It's just more of a trial-and-error process then? Anyone have a 36t on 104 BCD ring i can borrow to try before buying one? :-)
