Help on New Drive Train Advice

I'm putting a new 2 x 10 drive train on my racing buddies HT. I'm specing out all Sram X.9 components. I currently have the same excep the XX verion which is liter, I guess I'm happy with it, but still would rather ride my SS, except for racing, where I like gears as a back up to my fittness, if needed.

Anyway, the price works for him, but if he was to spend alittle more cash, is Shimano's system any better? I know they came out with an anti chain slap deraileur version.

I haven't kept up with the new drive trains lately because of my SS riding.

You won't get much improvement between X9 and XT, but you'll get different shifter feel and action. SRAM are push/push and Shimano now have push or pull/push, so SRAM goes all with the thumb only and Shimano use thumb and finger... Ask him to go in a bike shop and check out both shifters on the bikes displayed. Then he decide which one he prefers.

I'm more of a SRAM guy for derailleurs, Shimano for cassette, KMC for chain and various for crank (RaceFace, Shimano, FSA, etc). It's personal preference. Either way you can't go wrong honestly. If you go Shimano, get the Shadow rear derailleur, which is more inboard and less exposed to hits. SRAM are all the same design from X-5 to X0, just better, stiffer, lighter materials and higher tolerance in the manufacturing. IMO, X9 shifters are really nice over the X7 shifters, but you could rock a X7 rd to lower the cost a bit.
