Help converting to a 2x9 drivetrain

I'm in the process of upgrading my XT crankset and have noticed a few 2x9 drivetrain set-ups and it seems to fit my riding habits since I just don't use my granny ring at all. I'm currently running 9 speed XT pods with 9 speed XTR derailleurs. I've searched and read that I just run adjustment screw in to limit the chain falling into what used to be the granny gear location.....right? Is there a good 2x9 chain ring tooth combo to look at along with spiders and crank arms? What else needs to be done for the conversion ? This will be for XC Racing and training

You are correct - just adjust your limit screw to prevent the chain shifting to where the granny ring would be on a triple. You may want to use a shorter bb spindle. Many run a 29/42 or 29/44 and 12-34 cassette. If you want a 29t chainring, you'll have to use a 94mm bolt pattern, which means an older Race Face, Cannondale, Middleburn, etc. Search, many are using 2x9 here.
