Hey guys...a couple of quick Q's:
2005 Komodo
1. Built my AllMountain/Light Freeride 1x9 1yr ago with Raceface Diabolus Ext. BB on a Hone crankset. I rebuilt it as an AllMountain Light/XCTrail bike this year. Just recently replaced the worn out drivetrain with: Raceface 32t frt / SRAM PG990 / SRAM PC 971...when I hang the bike up and put resistance against the rear wheel and pedal very slowly with my hand...I feel a little "flat spot" sorta feeling in the crankset. Very subtle...like a messed up bearing. My Diabolus BB bearings do have a little bit of resistance when I pull the chain off and spin the crankset freely...not bad, but noteworthy.
- should I investigate my BB bearings further
- should I tear down my Hope Pro 2 rear hub (only 2-3yrs old) and rebuild (there's no lateral play and the hub spins freely)
1998 Komodo
2. I converted my other MTB over to a SS. I was running an old LX 32t front ring, 15t rear cog from a SRAM PG970, and somewhat worn chain. Everything felt good.
I wanted to switch to a 17t rear cog, so I ordered a tensioner and put on a fairly new 17t cog with a 1/2 worn PC971 chain. When I stood up to pedal, it felt like my chainring teeth were rubbing on the frame...terrible gritty nasty poppy feeling. I changed the old worn out LX 32t ring to a 1/2 worn Raceface ring with a newer chain that was worn-in to this chainring on another bike. Feels great under power, but during normal spinning theres a slight "flat-spot" feeling on this one too...sorta like a ball bearing that has a chunk taken out of it. (kinda feels like a chain with a link rusted together and pops as it passes by...though it seems to happen 2-4 times per revolution) I switched to a 16t cog b/c the 17t was too easy, and the nasty popping "feeling" is not nearly as noticeable...but still there. My rear wheel bearings are really rough...you can hear them rumble.
Should I investigate the rear wheel bearings making the odd noise under power, or the mixing of 1/2 worn chain/chainring with a nearly new cog?
This is a budget build that I don't wanna spend money on...but do you think I should just bite the bullet and buy a dedicated single speed front ring with 1/8" chain and switch to the SS rear wheel with a BMX style freewheel?
I know that mixing new/old drivetrain components is a big no-no, but as I said, this SS bike of mine is built from spare junk laying around.
