Going back to gears on my single speed. Debating between XT and XTR shifters. I have a set of the XT 770's on one bike and they are fine (took indicators off). That said I have the chance to get some XTR's this time around and am looking for some feedback.
If you're committed to the long run the slightly better bearings/materials/tolerances of XTR might be worthy, but somewhat depends on the price you can get the XTR for as the XT works very well.
Some people like it , some don't. I don't think it matters at all. How hard is it to push the button rapidly? Bang, bang, bang and you're done.
Also my XT shifters are 12 years old and I use them almost everyday riding in all kinds of bad weather. They still work perfect.
You can't go wrong with either one.
aside from the multi shifts you can also use the finger triggger both ways
both shift great, xtr is just a little better, but the extra options for shifting make it a better buy
Seems some of the difference in opinion here is using a rapid rise vs regular rear derailleur as that's the difference in mulitple gear shifting capabilities...
I do not know how the XT performs, but I am riding new XTR and love it. My old LX required three pushes to upshift from small to big, and now it only takes two. The multiple down shift will allow you to jump down one or two cogs with one push or pull. So you can drop from big to small cog in just four pushes or pulls.

not true the deraillier makes no difference, its all in the shifter, on the xtr 970 the finger (upper) lever can be either pushed or pulled either 1 or 2 gears, the thumb can be shifted 1, 2 or 3 gears at once.
the only difference the deraillier makes is whether the gears go up or down while pressing the levers (regular the gears get lower with the thumb lever and higher with the finger, rapid rise is opposite)
thats the rapid rise debate, is it better to be able to drop 3 gears or is it better to be able to shift up 3 gears faster?
Guess that depends on whether you find yourself suddenly descending on your trails a lot or suddenly hitting a hill to climb which would cause for quick sudden shifts. In either case, i'd opt for the XTR shifter because of that extra flexibility of double shifting with the trigger (and the use of better materials).

Try the XTRs on the trail if possible. I know they cost the earth, but I personally find the dual-release upshift capability alone would justify it for me. Great on fast singletrack, and also great in traffic!
The folks who feel that pulling or pushing the release button twice in a row is fast enough for them, well, that's great but it ain't fast enough for me. So until XT or SLX get that capability, I'm going with XTR. I do miss the OGDs but that's the price I pay for dual-release upshift.
