E-type derailleur rubs 34 tooth middle. What are my options?

I want to run a 34 tooth middle chainring with my E-type front derailleur but the inner cage plate rubs the middle ring when riding in the big ring. This can't be adjusted out. The E-type I'm using (XTR FD-960E) specifies 12 tooth min drop from big to middle (meaning a 32 tooth max with a 44 big), so I suppose this is what I get. Do I have to grind away the inner cage plate to provide clearance or is there something else I should try first?
