    Dura-Ace / XT parts mix

    I have a couple questions...

I'm thinking about building up a Surly Long Haul Trucker for loaded toruing. I am thinking of stripping some parts from my old hardatil MTB. I have an XT crank 22/32/44 with a 11-34 cassette and XT front and rear derailleurs. I am wondering if I can use Dura-Ace downtube shifters with the XT derailleurs.

Do you think I will have clearance problems with 175mm cranks? I plan on using the 56cm LHT with 3.1"/78mm BB Drop.

I have a set of 32-hole Chris King hubs built up with Bontrager Mustangs and 14/15 spokes. Should I get a stronger wheelset or build this up with stronger spokes and brass nips?

I'm trying to do this on the cheap. I'll probably be hauling 50-60 lbs of gear distributed over front and rear racks.

    8 speed - no

    9 speed - yes

    10 speed - no

Edit: 10 speed DA shifters will work with an XT RD if you're using a 10 speed cassette.

9-spd Dura-Ace downtube shifters or the XT components? My XT stuff is 9 spd.

    Might have found the answer:

    http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in...p/t-82290.html

"There *is* only one model of 9-speed bar-end: Dura-ace (SL-BS77). They work in all Shimano 9-speed setups with all Shimano indexed rear derailers *except* pre-9-speed Dura-ace. For the pre-9-speed Dura-ace (RD-7400), they actually shift 8-speed spacing. Before 9-speed, Dura-ace shifters only worked with Dura-ace rear derailers and that is probably the origin of the statement."

    Sound right?

9 speed parts will work together, down tube or bar end.
