    drive train pops under hard pressure. New setup

    I just put together my new bike. 7.0 grip shift, 7.0 rear derarailer, sram front derailer, sram chain, sram rear cassette. The shifter is 8 speed, the chain is 8 speed, the rear cassette is 8 speed, the front chain rings are 9 speed, the derailer is both. Everything works flawless but when under hard pressure the drive train pops for lack of better terminalogy. It happens hard enough that the pedals move from the ball of my feet to the heel. A real mommentum killer. How do I fix this. Everything is brand new. Except the rear cassette. That has 30 miles on it. I took it on 2 rides on a different bike. Still basicaly brand new though, right?

    I had the same issue it may work itself in.
    Believe it or not the old chain had some influence on the rear cassette.
    The chain should adapt.


    If you are getting a hope every 4 or 5 pedals or so look for a stiff link.


    other reason bent deraileur hanger(rear)
    freewheel hub is skipping.

    Chain stretches out first.

    Then the rear cogs stretch out.

    Then the front rings stretch out.

    Then ALL three of these have to be replaced.

    If the chain is skipping all by itself with NEW stuff, then some part of the drivetrain (gears, freehub, cogs, chain) is defective.

    The chain will adapt eventually, and continue to screw up any remaining part of the drivetrain that isn't already trashed.

    upon closer inspection I notice that it happens while on the bike stand also, under zero load. Also it happens on many gears. It looks like once on every revolution the rear cassett catches the chain only in the rear of thje cassett. Their is a consistent pattern hear. Almost as if something were out of square. If the indexing on the shifters was a little different it may help also. Not sure about though need to work on it some more. Thanks for the info, thats good stuff, a little more and I should have this thing licked. I have another derailure, I may try that and see what happens.

    1, stiff link
    2, bend link
    3, bend cassette

    Agreed..

    Back pedal the bike and if the chain 'catches' on the rear deraileur at a certain point, that is where the stiff link is.

    The links are fine, The cassette looks fine visualy but I am not sure about a better way of checking. I'll try an indicator off the chain stay to the cassett and see if it wobbles. Looks fine to me though. I am starting to believe that I do not have enough high gear adjustment. If the cable is slack, and the high stop is backed all the way out. It still seems as though it needs to go a little further out to stop the popping. I can make the popping stop in the other gears by adjusting the cable at the shifter barrell. The high has no more adjustment

    I just put a washer between the derailure and rear dropout. Seems to work, on the stand anyhow. Have to take it for a ride tomarrow after work and see what happens

    The washer did the trick. Amazing crisp
