Do i shorten my chain now?

Went from 3 rings up front to 2.

    Old setup 42/32/24

    new setup 36/22

Can I shorten my chain a bit? This would be perfect timing as the chain is already off the bike. Also noticed extra chain slap on these last couple rides.

thanks in advance for this noob

You probably should re-measure the chain. I expect you'll need to remove a couple of links to get to the proper chain length since the overall maximum chain length is shorter with the smaller chain ring up front. SRAM Chain Sizing - YouTube

beatercity, where did you find that info? I recently went from 3 to 2 up front as well and it's chainslap city for me. Share what you've learned. Thanks!

One of the most accepted ways (I always thought it was the proper way, but have heard other procedures) to size your chain is to place the chain on the bike without going through the derailleur, on the biggest ring up front and in back, then add 2 links to the amount of chain required for the above process. So yes, the OP only needed enough chain for the 36 tooth up front, instead of the original 42 tooth chain ring.

You could probably get away with a mid-cage rear derailleur also, but if your front rings are spread as far as the OP, it might be borderline.

I went with a mid-cage when I dropped the Big Ring up front, and I was 24-32-42 before. In my checking, if I go 36 for my second ring, I can still get away with the mid-cage.
