Different spacing for xtr(m970) small ring?

I read recently that the m970 cranks use a different spacing for the small ring. Can anyone confirm this? If so, how much diff than a standard small ring? I want to use non xtr (race face) rings on this crank...

    Thanks...

The M970 uses the standard 64mm spacing for the granny, previous XTR models did not.

I believe there is an offset to the teeth, which is what the op is talking about.

Just checked my 970's, they're about 3mm offset from 'centre'. I'm assuming you don't have rings on your crank now to check.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear with my question. Yes, the offset is what I meant, not the bolt circle.
You say 3 mm towards center. So a 3mm spacer under a ring w/ no offset would be in close to the same spot? Or maybe a better way to ask, what is the "correct" spacing of rings from small to middle? 2x9 with 9spd chain.
    Thanks again...

Ok, I've done a re-measure, as the previous post was a 'by-eye' type approximation. I put a BB spacer on the offset section of the ring and its a bit wider. As these are 2.5mm I would say 2mm is what you're looking at. Its hard to get an exact figure here as Shimano could have it 1.8mm out or something just to make it hard to fit aftermarket rings (as its done with XTR from the beginning).

If I was you, I'd just buy an XTR small ring or a Blackspire XTR-compatible ring and have done with it. Small rings are 'cheap' and I've never had a lot of luck with anything which has been jury-rigged .
