    derailleurs and chain slack

Some friends recently showed me some pictures of me riding and I noticed that it seemed when I encounter a log, rock or other harsh impact my chain goes slack under the chain stay, I assume this must be from the lower part of the rear derailleur thrusting forward. I have a SRAM 9.0 Is this a common occurence?
I noticed my chain will jump to the smaller chain ring on occassion on sketchy downhills. Could this be the problem?

    Completely normal.
The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common
